Finally summer is here in the UK…
When it’s warm and light, we seem to notice our surroundings more don’t you think?
I feel I can slow down on my dog walks, and if I have time, sit down on a bench, take time to notice the trees, listen to the birds, and ground myself.
This kind of stillness was something I really struggled with when I was younger.
Being still and quiet can be challenging right? Allowing space for emotions and thoughts which may be uncomfortable can be a real challenge.
I’ve recently been training to teach Restorative Yoga, and it seems the more I practice it, the more my body and mind can trust stillness.
I’ve noticed I’m sleeping better, I’m able to relax tight muscles more effectively, and I’m just learning to be kinder to myself.
What is Restorative Yoga?
Restorative Yoga is all about resting on our mats, connecting the mind with the body, and relaxing in a conscious way so we can fully benefit from its restorative results.
Our parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated when we relax into poses, which promotes a relaxation response and reduces stress in our bodies. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for slowing your heart rate and breath and increasing blood flow to your vital organs, among other things.
The images below show examples of these restful positions, but it’s very much about being in a position where you can relax, and modifications and alternatives are offered where necessary.
So why is stillness so powerful?
Enhances Mental Clarity and Focus
Stillness allows the mind to slow down and declutter. By reducing the constant stream of thoughts, you can achieve greater mental clarity and focus. This helps in making more thoughtful decisions and improving problem-solving skills.
Reduces Stress and Anxiety
When you allow yourself to be still, it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s rest and digest response. This counteracts the stress-induced fight or flight response, leading to reduced stress levels and a calming effect on anxiety.
Promotes Emotional Regulation
Stillness gives you the space to observe your emotions without reacting impulsively. It helps in recognizing and understanding your feelings, fostering better emotional regulation and resilience. This practice can lead to a more balanced and stable emotional state.
Fosters Self-Awareness and Insight
Taking time to be still allows for introspection and self-reflection. This deepened self-awareness can lead to personal growth, as you gain insights into your thoughts, behaviors, and patterns. It encourages a deeper connection with your true self and values.
Improves Physical Health
Stillness and the relaxation it brings can have a positive impact on physical health. It can lower blood pressure, reduce muscle tension, and improve sleep quality. By giving the body time to rest and recover, stillness can enhance overall well-being and vitality.
By integrating periods of stillness into your daily routine, you can experience these powerful benefits, leading to a more balanced, peaceful, and fulfilling life.
