It can be pretty daunting going into hospital for a hysterectomy or any surgery.
Packing some essential ‘self care’ items can hugely help with healing, feeling calm and supported.
Guided meditations are such an important part of this tool kit….but why?
Dr Herbert Benson of the Mind-Body institute, part of Harvard University’s Medical School has found that the relaxation response from meditation practice triggers increased activity in the parts of the brain called the para sympathetic nervous system, responsible for the body’s ‘rest and digest’ functions, as well as decreasing activity in the sympathetic nervous system, the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response.
Meditation has been shown to play an important role in
- strengthening the body’s immune system;
- regulating moods;
- improving blood flow to injured parts of the body;
- helping with pain management.
All these factors help the body concentrate on what it truly needs – healing.
